How To Install SSL In CPanel: A Step-By-Step Guide

In today’s digital age, securing your website with an SSL certificate is more crucial than ever. SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encrypts the data exchanged between your website and its visitors, ensuring privacy and data integrity. If you’re using cPanel, installing an SSL certificate is a straightforward process. This guide will walk you through each step, making the process easy to follow.

Why SSL is Important

Before diving into the installation steps, let’s briefly discuss why SSL is vital for your website:

  • Security: SSL encrypts sensitive information, protecting it from hackers.
  • SEO Boost: Search engines like Google prioritize websites with SSL, helping improve your site’s ranking.
  • Trust: Visitors trust sites with SSL certificates more, as indicated by the padlock symbol in the browser’s address bar.

Steps to Install SSL in cPanel

Step 1: Purchase an SSL Certificate

  1. Choose a Provider: You can purchase an SSL certificate from various providers, such as Let’s Encrypt (free), Comodo, or Symantec.
  2. Select the Type: Choose the type of SSL certificate that fits your needs (e.g., single domain, multi-domain, wildcard).

Step 2: Log in to cPanel

  1. Access cPanel: Navigate to your web hosting provider’s cPanel login page, usually at https://abssoft.net.np:2083.
  2. Enter Credentials: Log in with your username and password.

Step 3: Generate a CSR (Certificate Signing Request)

  1. Find the SSL/TLS Section: In the cPanel dashboard, scroll down to the “Security” section.
  2. Click on SSL/TLS: Open the SSL/TLS manager.
  3. Generate a New Certificate: Click on “Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests.”
  4. Enter Details: Fill out the CSR form with your domain information, company details, and other required fields.
  5. Generate: Click the “Generate” button to create the CSR. Copy the CSR code as you’ll need it to purchase the SSL certificate.

Step 4: Purchase and Validate the SSL Certificate

  1. Provide the CSR: During the SSL purchase process, you will be asked to provide the CSR code you generated.
  2. Validation: Complete the validation process. This could be done via email, DNS, or HTTP, depending on the SSL provider.

Step 5: Install the SSL Certificate in cPanel

  1. Return to cPanel: Once the SSL certificate is issued, log back into your cPanel account.
  2. Access SSL/TLS Section: Navigate back to the “SSL/TLS” manager.
  3. Install an SSL Certificate: Click on “Manage SSL sites” under the “Install and Manage SSL for your site (HTTPS)” section.
  4. Paste the Certificate: In the “Domain” dropdown, select the domain for which the SSL is issued. Paste the certificate code (CRT) provided by your SSL issuer into the “Certificate: (CRT)” box.
  5. Autofill by Certificate: Click on the “Autofill by Certificate” button. This will automatically fill in the “Private Key” and “Certificate Authority Bundle (CABUNDLE)” fields if they are not already populated.
  6. Install Certificate: Click the “Install Certificate” button. cPanel will process the installation.

Step 6: Verify the Installation

  1. Check the URL: Visit your website using https:// in the URL. Look for the padlock icon in the browser’s address bar, indicating that the SSL certificate is active.
  2. SSL Checker: Use online tools like SSL Labs’ SSL Test to verify the installation and ensure there are no issues.
